The California Current System is a coastal upwelling biome, as found along the eastern margins of all major ocean basins. These are among the most productive ecosystems in the world ocean. A process cruise was conducted in April 2007 aboard the R/V Thompson, a ship owned by the University of Washington. We initiated "Picture of the Day" with the intention of bringing ship life closer to those who are land-based and to advance ocean education through imagery. Each day during the cruise a dedicated photographer sent an image of the sea, equipment used, or life at sea, along with a brief description. The powerful images were (and are currently) being shared among educators, scientists, and family. We plan to expand this project to our future CCE process cruises.
