The 'Teacher at Sea' opportunities provide formal and informal educators a unique chance to participate in real-world, interdisciplinary research alongside scientists from the California Current Ecosystem LTER, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Each cruise has a specific set of research goals and investigations that allow participants the exposure to and practice in diverse shipboard sampling and experimental procedures. It also offers exceptional professional background experience, and encourages the design, development and integration of new instructional materials aligned with science standards. Support from an Education & Outreach Coordinator links the partnerships between scientists and educators. Our goals are to help promote awareness toward understanding and protecting the world's oceans and its resources.

This 'at-sea', science and educational experience is for individuals interested in broadening their scientific knowledge, participating in state-of-the-art, hands-on, oceanic research, and communicating interdisciplinary educational experiences in the classroom and beyond.

We invite educators this summer to investigate contemporary issues surrounding direct and indirect links among our ocean, atmosphere and global climate change. Aboard the R/V Melville June 18th - July 17th, you will join site scientists, graduate students and educational professionals researching the ecological evidence of climate change appearing across marine food chains and food webs within the California Current Ecosystem. This eight week experience will have you gathering and sharing photographs, and video clips on our cruise blog and collecting evidence to build activities for your classroom explaining both the science and potential research surrounding the issues of climate change within this coastal upwelling ecosystem.
